Why I’ve Stopped No ‘Poo (But Still Recommend It!)

Ultra Gentle Natural ShampooI recently wrote about my adventures with the no ‘poo or no shampoo regimen. I never attempted the baking soda/apple cider vinegar routine because it’s really not suitable for colored hair (If you don’t already know, I color mine to cover grey hair…at age 25 arg). Instead I chose to use the “conditioner only” method and tried this with some success for about 3 months. Ultimately, though, I have decided to go back to using an organic shampoo and abandon my no ‘poo attempt. Here’s why:

The Good?

I do feel like my hair’s condition has improved significantly. It is softer, has less breakage, and even feels thicker! Better yet, even though I’ve abandoned co-washing, it helped my hair transition from needing a shampoo every day to now only needing one every 3 days or so.

The Bad?

I initially became interested in no ‘poo because I liked the idea of lessening my chemical exposure and felt it would be better for the health of my hair. But ultimately I found that most organic chemical free conditioners didn’t work for co-washing. They all contained oils or heavy ingredients that weighed down my fine hair and caused scalp acne and flaking. Ouch!

Only cheap, lightweight mainstream conditioners like Suave worked, and only because they actually contain chemical surfactants that help strip the scalp of its oils. I had to use a lot of conditioner for this method, so even though each bottle was cheap I was going through about a bottle a week! So, in the end, I decided that co-washing just wasn’t an improvement over my previous low ‘poo methods (using a very chemical free, organic shampoo by Aubrey Organics).

The Takeaway

I now only need to low ‘poo my hair with Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose Shampoo once every 3 days or so. It smells amazing and it’s completely natural and gentle. I could probably stretch it longer actually, and I fully intend to try to continue to stretch out my shampoos. When I was low ‘pooing before I was still washing my hair every day, so this is a huge improvement. Since I don’t need to shampoo everyday I can skip a shower if I’m running late without feeling grungy–such a great sense of freedom!

Above all, my new simple, lower maintenance hair care mixed with my new “no wash” facial care has really given me a whole new lease on life. I feel so much more relaxed and like I have all this time for plain old living! It’s amazing what a little more sleep, a bit more free time, and a little less fuss can do for your peace of mind.

I’m really glad I tried no ‘poo and would recommend it to anyone. Even if it doesn’t work as a long term solution for you, it will probably convince you that you don’t need to bathe/shampoo/wash as often as the mainstream might have you think, and you might find yourself with a great deal of newfound freedom.
